There are two negative comments about the gate which I have detailed below related to dogs chewing on the wooden sections of the gate, and the low height won’t retain your dog if it likes to jump. Those observations are from myself, having personally used this gate for over three years.

Although there are cheaper gates the user opinion is that this gate is definitely worth the price. You can’t go wrong with this choice and the customer comments and opinion give it glowing reviews. I can personally attest to this as I am extremely happy with the two Richell gates that my wife and I own.
We have a 20.1 inch tall model that is used to keep our Shih Tzu dogs in our split level house on the lower level and the kitchen that has a doggy door access to the deck and yard. The 20 inch tall gate is very comfortable to step over and works well. Even when our young grandchildren visit they can step over the gate too.
However, we have one issue with the gate, no we actually have two issues.
Criticism of the Richell Pet Gate
The first criticism is that some dogs sure like to chew on wood. Yes, while we love our wooden gate because of the quality aesthetics, our dogs love it even more. There are some pretty good gnaw marks on the wood, mainly on the side legs. But I still prefer this gate to some ugly plastic gates that can be had for less money.
And our second issue relates to our eldest Shih Tzu is a dare devil and likes to leap down as many as 6 steps in a single leap. This gate at 20 inches tall just keeps all the other lesser jumpers at bay and gives our pack leader free reign of the house. Yes, our beloved ShihTzu Robin can jump the gate pretty easily. But it works amazingly well for our other small dogs.
Summary
So, when we need to keep Robin out of the living room and upstairs, such as when we are out of the house, we just swap in our 27.75 inch tall Richell Gate version and that does the trick. At almost 28 inches tall though that gate is more difficult to step over, but this 20 inch tall Richell Wood Gate is our favorite and we highly recommend it!
